It’s cold — and it might be colder next week.

Our office heater is on the fritz. The temperature in St. Paul right now: 6 degrees. Typing up last weekend’s News from Lake Wobegon summary took a little longer than usual this morning.

Happy (belated) birthday, F. Scott Fitzgerald!

In 1996, to celebrate F. Scott Fitzgerald’s 100th birthday (he was born on September 24, 1896 on Laurel Avenue in St. Paul), Garrison narrated a two-hour documentary about Fitzgerald’s early life in Minnesota’s capitol city:

Think Scott Fitzgerald’s birthplace should be memorialized? So did the guy who lived in the apartment where he was born—to the tune of selling it for a quarter mil and using the proceeds to start his own Fitzgerald legacy non-profit. Way to go, literary philanthropy!
Sidebar: I’m pretty sure this move solidifies the Twin Cities as a potentially awesome roadtrip: Mary Tyler Moore statue in Minneapolis; Fitzgerald legacy society in St. Paul. Huzzah for U.S. pop culture!

A quick note: Tickets for our fall run at the Fitzgerald Theater are now on sale—including our season-opening broadcast on September 15th, which will be followed by the annual Meatloaf Supper and Street Dance!
Austin honky-tonkers The Derailers will once again be heading up Intersate 35 to join us for the show and the street dance. (If you’re in the Twin Cities, don’t miss the street dance—it’s quite the party on Exchange Street and it’s free!)
